The Celtic people, who lived more than 20xx years ago feared the evening of Oct. 31 more than any other day of the year. It was the eve of their festival of Samhain. Samhain was a joyful harvest festival that marked the death of the old year and the beginning of a new one. The day itself was a time for paying homage to the sun god Baal who had provided the people with the ripened grain for use in the upcoming winter. Come evening evil spirits were everywhere. Charms and spells were said to have more power on the eve of Samhain. Several rituals were performed by the Celtic priests, Druids, to appease the Lord of the Dead.

在上世紀(jì)90年代中后期，鏡湖的水體呈高富營(yíng)養(yǎng)化狀態(tài)，水質(zhì)嚴(yán)重惡化，水變成了黃色。惡化的'原因主要有：蕪湖市某醫(yī)院通過(guò)地下水道將大量未經(jīng)處理的污物、污水直接排進(jìn)了鏡湖；部分素質(zhì)不高的市民往鏡湖里倒垃圾；最可氣的是鏡湖風(fēng)景區(qū)的某些工作人員竟然在鏡湖里洗拖把！慢慢地，鏡湖水變成了黃色，湖面上漂浮著許多垃圾，還散發(fā)著一股臭味。來(lái)到鏡湖邊的人們都捂著鼻子跑開(kāi)了，嘴里還不停地說(shuō)：“真臭！臭死了！”
一九九九年DDD二０００年，蕪湖市人民政府號(hào)召全市人民清理鏡湖。首先，工作人員用機(jī)器將湖水抽干，再由黨員帶頭和市民們一起挖掉淤泥，最后注入清澈的水。我外公是黨員，他有著親身體驗(yàn)，外公說(shuō)，那次勞動(dòng)很累，但改善了鏡湖的水質(zhì)，大伙兒都感到很高興。
