Male and Female Attitudes towards Marriage
Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by Jane Austen，an English writer, who first gave the novel its modern characters through the treatment of everyday life.“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in poeion of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.” The novel directly begins with the theme: Marriage and Money.Jane Austen imposed her view of marriage on her describing of relationship among different males and females.According to the novel, males and females in some degree have diffident values towards marriage.Through some main characters, we can have a comparison.
First, we throw our eyes to the male characters.Take George Wickham for example, he is an old acquaintance of Darcy from childhood, and an officer in the militia unit stationed near Merton.Superficially charming, he rapidly forms a friendship with Elizabeth Benet, prompting remarks upon his suitability as a potential husband.He spreads numerous tales about the wrongs Darcy has done to him, coloring the popular perception of the other man in local society.It is eventually revealed that these tales are distortions, and that Darcy was the wronged man in their acquaintance.He is a man with bad quality, but his appearance is deceptive, he has a witty tongue and elegant behavior, who is a deadly attraction to women like Lydia.Once he was addicted to gambling and escape from Breton because of a large amount of debts.Lydia has neither high status nor money, but he is willing to have an accompanier on his escaping way.The book never mentioned why Wickham choose Lydia as his wife.The primary reason, in my eyes, is money.Because he fell in love with Mi King and Elizabeth before not because of love but money.At that time, Wickham can not have a large heritage because of his lower social status, so he is greedier for money.At last, Mr.Darcy helped him to pay for his debts and provided him with another 1000 pounds and a official position, which immediately led to his marriage.So we can easily see, in spite of paion, money played an important role in their marriage.Besides, Mr.Collins aged twenty-five, is Mr.Benet’s clergyman cousin and, as Mr.Benet has no son, heir to his estate.Austen described him as "not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little aisted by education or society.” He is a clumsy and conceit man and good at flattering, so he can easily appreciated
by Mrs.Catherine and gets a position in church.Mr.Collins chose Lady Lucas obviously attributed to love.He expreed his reasons about marriage when he asked for Elizabeth’s hands:” First, that I think it a right thing for every clergyman in easy circumstances (like myself) to set the example of matrimony in his parish.Secondly, that I can convinced it will add every greatly to my happine; and thirdly which perhaps I ought to have mentioned earlier, that it is the particular advice and recommendation of the very noble lady whom I have the honor of calling patrone.” So Mr.Collins is a person who sacrifices his marriage to reality and reputation.
In spite of Mr.Bingley and Mr.Darcy’s values, I think, Wickham and Mr.Collins’s attitudes toward marriage should be the majority of values at that time.Males pursue high status and money rather than love.So how could they be happy? Their marriages are doomed to tragedies.
Now we will throw our eyes back to females.Of course, Elizabeth Benet is our first consideration.Elizabeth Bennet is the main character and protagonist.The reader sees the unfolding plot and the other characters mostly from her viewpoint.The second of the Benet daughters at twenty years old, she is intelligent, lively, attractive, and witty, but with a tendency to judge on first impreions and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments.Elizabeth believed that marriage must be based on love, which is one of the reasons why she misunderstood Mr.Darcy before.She is such a girl with great wit, courage and self-conscience so that she is not polluted by society and keeps her own opinions.And at last grasped Mr.Darcy’s heart tightly and live a happy life.In contrast to Elizabeth, her intimate friend Charlotte Lucas doesn’t think highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object.She believes that it is the only honorable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happine, must be their pleasantest preservative from want.So although Mr.Collins to be sure was neither sensible nor agreeable; his society was irksome, and his attachment to her must be imaginary.But still, he would be her husband.This is a miserable marriage which put interest ahead of everything.
It seems a little bit difference between males and females’ attitudes towards marriage.Males completely regard money and status beyond everything while women conceal something in some degree but still be obseed by reality.Elizabeth is an exception.Jane Austen expreed
marriage and love vividly among gentlemen and ladies around her by her specific female foresight.She criticized the civil marriages through Elizabeth’s tongue.It was obviously that the author not approved that money should be totally divided with love, but not equal to love.It was true that money played an important role in marriage, but it not means one can gain love and marriage through his big fortune.The author made full of other ladies’ relationships to expre the ideal marriage of Elizabeth.
I have the same opinion with Jane Austen on marriage and love.According to the novel, the marriage based on money and reputation is not stable at all and people can not feel happy.Whether you admit or not, marriage and love do sometimes aociate with property and status, in my eyes, it not completely lies on property and status.Marriage should be based on mutual love and respect.

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite novel， which impresses me for a longtime. It describes a love story mainly between Elisabeth， who I like the best，and a rich and proud man， Darcy.
The story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a housenear the Bennet. In a ball， Elisabeth gave such a bad impression on Darcy’sfirst pride that she refused Darcy’s first proposal. Darcy was so surprised byElisabeth’s refusal that he loved Elisabeth more deeply. And Elisabeth’santipathy made Darcy realize his shortings. He was not angry about Elisabeth’scensure， but also he changed his previous proud attitude.
During Elisabeth’s travel in Darcy’s manor. Darcy was very nice to heruncle and aunt， different from previous proud attitude. When one of Elisabeth’ssisters ran away with Wickham， Darcy helped Elisabeth find her sister andprevent her sister from the loss of reputation， with nobody knowing that it washe who helped the Bennet. So many changes in Darcy eliminated Elisabeth’sprejudice. At last it end with their marriage.
Taking the daily life as its material， this story reflected the life andlove in a conservative你 and blocking England town. It reflected the author’sview about marriage that it is fault to marry for property， money and status andit is also foolish to take these elements into account. In fact Darcy’s pridemanifested the gap between their statuses.
Since his pride existed， there is no ideal marriage between Elisabeth andDarcy. From the different attitudes from Darcy’s two proposals， it reflected thefeminine pursuit of personality independence and right equality， which is aprogressive character from the image of Elisabeth.

Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by the famous English writer, Jane Austen, who was the sixth children in a family of seven and was born in the village of steventon in Hampshire in 1775 and died of Addison’s disease in 1817. The book first published on 28 January 1813 by the bookseller Thomas Egerton who had also published Sense and Sensibility, the original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions .
Pride and Prejudice is a love story, mainly tells the love between Elizabeth and Darcy. It divided into 2 volumes and is composed of 42 chapters altogether. The major characters are Mr. Darcy, A rich and proud young man. Elizabeth, the second eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Bingley , A rich young bachelor. Jane, the first daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Bennet. The story begin with Bingley’s arrival. One day when Mrs.Bennet hear Bingley has taken Netherfield, a house near her’s. She is so happy and arranged one of her five daughters marriage with him. At a ball, luckly, Bingley and Jane fall in love at the first sight. Darcy, a friend of Bingley’s , was attracted to Elizabeth, a lively and spirited girl. But Darcy greatly offends her by his supercilious behavior and this dislike is increased by Wickham, a dashing young militia officer of the unjust treatment he has met with at Darcy's hands.
One day when Darcy and Bingley’s two sisters disgusted with the vulgarity of Mrs. Bennet and her two youngest daughters, effectively separated Bingley and Jane. Meanwhile, Collins, a cousin of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, married charlotte, a friend of Elizabeth’s, for Elizabeth’s refuse to marry him. But One day Darcy send Elizabeth a letter, in which he justifies the separation of his friend Bingley and Jane and make it clear that Wickham is. So Elizabeth changed her opinions and ideas toward him. Once when Elizabeth visited her uncle and aunt in the north of England, she met Darcy there and witnessed his changes through series of behaviors, no longer pride and become gentle and attentive, all these made their marriage arranged, and they also suitably provided for Bingley and Jane’s reunited and engaged. The story ends with both their happy marriages.
My point of view towards the masterpiece of Jane Austen’s is that this novel reflects the English human sentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative，and tells us the difference ways and attitudes to marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five daughters’. Thereby reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid Without considering all of these. There, the author emphasize the importance of ideal marriage, meanwhile, to be opposed to love & marriage based on money or property and to be opposed to people’s laugh love & marriage off.
The author takes the affection/love as the cornerstone of ideal marriage between male and female. Elizabeth as the leading character in this novel, was born in the family of squireen’s, and is loved by Darcy. Darcy propose marriage to her in spite of difference in the possession of property and social status, but is refused byElizabeth for his pride , the novel demonstrate that if the pride of Darcy’s existed ， there will be no love and also happy marriage between Elizabeth and he, it is really nice that Elizabeth witness the changes of Darcy’s through series of behavior in the following days.
Viewing that he is no longer pride and then eliminating her prejudice to him, finally engaged with him and leading a happy marriage. The author described that female is in pursuit of independent personality and equal right through several different attitudes of Elizabeth for Darcy’s propose marriage. Pride and Prejudice is the most enduringly popular novel written by Jane Austen. It talks about trivial matters of love, marriage and family life between country squires and fair ladies in Britain in the 18th century. The plot is very simple. That is how the young ladies choose their husbands. Someone said that “Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of the novel, flatly rejected William Collins’ proposal, who is the heir of her father’s property and manor, and refused the first proposal from the extremely wealthy nobleman Fitzwilliam Darcy later,”(1) all this makes it clear that Elizabeth “seeks no fame nor fortune, but self-improvement and high mental outlook.”(1) It’s right. From the view point of Austen, Elizabeth’s marriage, who finally marries Darcy, as well as Jane-Bingley’s, composing money and love, is the ideal marriage people should after. But in other marriage cases in this novel, we can see that if money and love can’t be held together in one marriage, love would always make a concession to money because of the special social background. After reading through the whole book, we will find that money acts as the cause of each plot and the clue of its development. It affects everybody’s words and deeds, even Elizabeth Bennet. Tony Tanner once said, “Jane Austen, as well as other authors, is very clear that no feeling could be extremely pure and no motive could be definitely single. Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters.
The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. （Actually she is a pedant.） Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.
The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book.
The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”。 The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.
People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.
I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.
In “Pride and Prejudice”， the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.
In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?
Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”， her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.

As is known to all, Pride and Prejudice which was written by a famous English female writer Jane Austen is still a classic in English literature nowadays. Jane Austen who was born and lived her whole life in England wrote six books in her life time.
Her novels all described the lifestyle and social communications of families in the countries of England as what she is familiar with. The book Pride and Prejudice is the typical one that fully expressed Jane’s view on marriage and emphasized that the benefit on economic exerts a great influence on marriage.
The characters in the novel all had their own opinions on marriage. Mrs. Bennet, for instance, has only one aim-that of finding a good match for each of her five daughters.
As for Elizabeth, who is the second daughter in the Bennet family said that only deep love would persuade her to marry which was why she would probably end up an old maid. Lydia and Charlotte, however, were two extremes. The former just married for sex, while the latter married for a comfortable home and protection.
There are just so many different characters that were all formed under the society of England in 18’s century. Then, there was filled with unfairness between men and women. Just as what Jane Austen said,”It is a truth universally knowledge, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. ”

In this semester, I have read the book Pride and Prejudice in English version. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favoritebooks. In this book, Jane Austen shows us different ways and attitudes toward marriage by describing four love stories in the book. Many people may simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this novel reflects the English human sentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative.This masterpiece ofJane Austenperfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at that time.Thereby, it reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid without considering all of these.
In this book, Jane Austengave the people vivid characters.The characters have their own personalities. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.And that is why I like it.
The character in this book I like best is Elizabeth. From where I stand, Elizabeth is unique. From story to see, Elizabeth has both resourcefulness and courage. She has vision and very strong self-respect. What’s more, she is good at thinking. She owns her views and behaves properly. In the novel, WhenMr.Collins expresses his love and wants to marry her, she can promptly refuse him. Furthermore, when Darcy’s aunt arrogantly puts forward her requirement that Elizabeth should reject Mr.Darcy, she firmly turns down her offensive requirement. From it, we can see that Elizabeth has her own persistence of love and never stop pursuing. Of course at first Elizabeth also displays significant pride. Though not influenced by economic status, Elizabeth is most proud of her ability of perception. Although it is her wrong perception which causes her to misjudge Mr.Darcy and also Wickham, when Elizabeth hears of Wickham’saccusations of Darcy, she trusts the negative perception of him, and mistakenly views Darcy’sconceit. Fortunately she finally eliminated her prejudice to him when she got an acquaintance of what Darcy did for her, because they give up prejudice to each other, the can have a happy marriage.In my opinion, the personality ethic of Elizabeth caused her independent idea of love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life.
The language used in this book is one of the reason I like the book. Humorous, ironical, polished language and real storyline occurred in this articlegive me a deep impression.Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”， her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics.

And in the near future, I will choose other works of Jane Austen to read. Maybe the next book I will choose is Sense and Sensibility.

One day the Bennets had a new neighbor called Bingley who was a wealthybachelor and followed be the target of Mrs. Bennet. At a ball Bingley fell inlove with Jane Bennet who’s the oldest daughter of the Bennets. Bingley’s friendDarcy also came to the ball and struck the sights， many girls liked him while hethought all of them couldn’t suit his preference， including Elizabeth. Mr. Darcyalways shows others a impression of pride， having found this Elizabeth began tohate Mr. Darcy.
Before long Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth Bennett because of her lovelybehavior， while Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and has a prejudice abouthim. The official Wickham was weled by the villagers， and Elizabeth also took ashine to him. Wickham told someting about darcy，which increased Eli’s prejudiceabout Mr. Darcy. At another ball Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth to dance with him， but Eli refusedhim. Eli’s elder male cousin Mr. Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit theBennetts property by rules， he wanted to marry with one of the Bennets. Havingknown that Jane was already engaged with Mr. Bingley， he asked Elizabeth tomarry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who wasEli’s friend.
Mr. Collins was good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the helpof Lady Catherine. Once his family was invited to Rosings Garden by LadyCatherine. Elizabeth also went there with Mr. Collin and Charllote. There shemet Mr. Darcy who’s Lady Catherine’s nephew.Then Mr. Darcy came to the Collins’and confessed his love for Elizabeth， of course he was rejected impolitely.
Afterwards Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Eli in order to remove hermisunderstandings of him. Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt were also impressed by Mr.Darcy’s politeness. Gradually Eli’s prejudice of Mr. Darcy disappeared.Eventually they became couple.
In my opinion ，on the one hand，I think Elizabeth has personality ethicwhich caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence sheearned a happy life. There’re also Eli’s sisters’ love stories served as contrasts to thefemale subject’s ideal marriage， such as Charlotte and Collin’s life: they dohad a luxury life， but there’s no real love between them and this kind ofmarriage is surely a tragedy of society.On the other hand，Darcy is brave ，he diddo his best to pursuit his love.
As a matter of fact，everyone has shortings ，after reading the story ，I didrealize that we should find our advantages and disadvantages byourselves.Moreover，it’s necessary for us to try our best to get over shortings.Iam aware that we ought to get along with others with the same attitude.The rightthat seeking for happiness is equal for everyone.therefore，we should value thethings that we have，and cherish the chances.

MISS AUSTEN never attempts to describe a scene or a class of society with which she was not herself thoroughly acquainted. The conversations of ladies with ladies, or of ladies and gentlemen together, are given, but no instance occurs of a scene in which men only are present. The uniform quality of her work is one most remarkable point to be observed in it. Let a volume be opened at any place: there is the same good English, the same refined style, the same simplicity and truth. There is never any deviation into the unnatural or exaggerated; and how worthy of all love and respect is the finely disciplined genius which rejects the forcible but transient modes of stimulating interest which can so easily be employed when desired, and which knows how to trust to the never-failing principles of human nature! This very trust has sometimes been made an objection to Miss Austen, and she has been accused of writing dull stories about ordinary people. But her supposed ordinary people are really not such very ordinary people. Let anyone who is inclined to criticise on this score endeavor to construct one character from among the ordinary people of his own acquaintance that shall be capable of interesting any reader for ten minutes. It will then be found how great has been the discrimination of Miss Austen in the selection of her characters, and how skillful is her treatment in the management of them. It is true that the events are for the most part those of daily life, and the feelings are those connected with the usual joys and griefs of familiar existence; but these are the very events and feelings upon which the happiness or misery of most of us depends; and the field which embraces them, to the exclusion of the wonderful, the sentimental, and the historical, is surely large enough, as it certainly admits of the most profitable cultivation.
In the end, too, the novel of daily real life is that of which we are least apt to weary: a round of fancy balls would tire the most vigorous admirers of variety in costume, and the return to plain clothes would be hailed with greater delight than their occasional relinquishment ever gives. Miss Austen's personages are always in plain clothes, but no two suits are alike: all are worn with their appropriate differen AS we should expect from such a life, Jane Austen's view of the world is genial, kindly, and, we repeat, free from anything like cynicism. It is that of a clear-sighted and somewhat satirical onlooker, loving what deserves love, and amusing herself with the foibles, the self-deceptions, the affectations of humanity. Refined almost to fastidiousness, she is hard upon vulgarity; not, however, on good-natured vulgarity, such as that of Mrs. Jennings in "Sense and Sensibility," but on vulgarity like that of Miss Steele, in the same novel, combined at once with effrontery and with meanness of soul.

Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. (Actually she is a pedant.) Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.
The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book.
The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”. The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.
People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.
I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.
In “Pride and Prejudice”, the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.
In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?
Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.

"It is a truth universally acknowledges that a single man in possession ofa good fortune must be in want of a wife." This is just as Leo Tolstoy’s famousstarting in 《Anna Karenina》: "All happy families resemble one another， eachunhappy family is unhappy in its own way". To begin with such a design， JaneAusten has her deep meaning. Marriage and money are inseparable. The undertoneis very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion butpossession. The author does not deny this. So she uses typical Bennets to provethis truth.
The story takes place in the class-conscious England of the late 18thcentury. The five Bennet sisters--including strong-willed Elizabeth and youngLydia--have all been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding awealthy husband. So when a wealthy bachelor shows up in their lives， the wholefamily is turned upside-down. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome butsnobbish Mr. Darcy， the battle of the sexes is joined.
As we all know， Austen， in this novel， through the five Bennet daughters’attitude towards love and marriage， shows the relationship between mentalfeelings， such as love， and material possessions ， which also reflects theauthor''s attitude: Marry for the sake of property， money or status is wrong;marry but do not take into account the above factors is foolish. As a result，she not only opposed to marry for the purpose of money， but also opposed totreat marriage as child''s play. She stressed the importance of an idealmarriage.
