We might think perfect pitch is an innate talent. Well, a study in the American Journal of Human Genetics is providing some evidence for that.

Perfect pitch, aka absolute pitch, is the rare ability to name or recreate musical notes like A or middle C without using any comparable reference.

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco studied the results from an online test taken by over ten thousand people. Not surprisingly, individuals tended to either have perfect pitch or not.

But in a closer study of 73 families researchers found a region of genes on chromosome eight in those with perfect pitch and from European ancestry. More study is needed to zero in on just which gene or multiple genes might be responsible. And for comparison they intend to study individuals without perfect pitch but with equivalent musical training.

There is some evidence that babies have the ability for absolute pitch, so researchers for this study theorize that maybe most lose this ability with age, but that what a so-called pitch gene does is extend this talent through a crucial period in childhood.

Athletics is, in many ways, the embodiment of the Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius, Fortius", meaning faster, higher, stronger.

Athletics (or track and field) is about running faster, jumping higher and throwing further than your competitors. The ancient Games at Olympia began simply with foot races, only occasionally complicated by dressing the runners in infantry armour or making them carry soldiers’ shields. Today, athletics remains one of the most popular Olympic sports. From the 100m dash to the 42.195km marathon, from the hammer throw to the high jump, it contains many of the Olympic Games’ blue-ribbon events and many of the highest-profile competitors.

My grandpa is a retired worker. On summer evenings, we often sat together outside the house enjoying the cool air. It was the time that he told me lots of his experiences before liberation, some of which I've forgotten, but there is one I'll remember forever.

When my grandpa was fourteen years old, he worked in a coal mine. One day, when he and his two workmates were working in the tunnel an unfortunate thing suddenly happened. A part of the tunnel fell down, and they were shut in it. They had no food to eat. When they were hungry they only drank some water there. It was very cold in it. I order to keep warm they hugged one another. In the darkness, they didn't know whether it was day or night, they only felt they had stayed there for a very long time. They were too hungry to speak or move, and thought they would die. At last, the tunnel was dug through. They were saved. They had been there for fourteen days!

My grandpa said they had not been let out at once. If so, they would have died. They were kept at the entrance to the tunnel where it was very dim, and they were fed with some thin porridge. After a day or two, they had recovered a bit, and they were helped out.

After liberation, my grandpa worked very hard, and he was elected as an advanced worker every year. He is also a people representative of our city. He is loved and respected by everyone who knows him, and he lives the rest of his life happily.

Certainly, there are times when silence pays rich dividends. In the Bible, Solomon said: “The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; the one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin”. Surely the kind of silence here advised, the control of one’s tongue, is “golden” indeed. Silence is certainly “golden” when compared to speaking evil. How wonderfully golden the silence would be if all whispering, backbiting, lying, slander and such like could be forever stopped. Meanwhile, “Silence is golden” also means that one is restrained, listening whole-heartedly firstly, and then carefully making her speech. Too many times we may be guilty of saying too much without taking into account the context.

There are other times, however, when silence is not “golden”. It may be just plain yellow or cowardly in such instance. To remain silent at times when one should speak up is to be guilty of cowardice and results in a failure to do one’s duty. It all depends upon the circumstances. Many times those who should speak out and warn of danger remain silent because they are afraid or fear that they might hurt someone’s feelings. Such silence is far from being golden. Moreover, such a person lends strength to the forces of evil, and by failing to oppose such can be counted with the enemies for all practical purposes.

All in all, in most cases, silence can drive you to a favourable position where you can either go forward and do perfect defense. On top of the position, only silver speech can make you win something.
