　　one afternoon my english teacher and i went to visit a students mother, who was lying in hospital. as soon as we entered the hospital, something happened.

　　a 15-year-old girl was carrying a patient, her father, to the doctors office. before they reached the office, the old man fell down to the ground, gasping his last①. what a pity to see the girl too weak to do anything for him! feeling helpless, she did nothing but cry.at this moment, some people went to help, but were shocked to find that the old man was dying fast. they were too frightened to do anything.glancing at me, my english teacher hurried over to the dying man without hesitation②. he knelt on one knee and lifted the old man up. but the man couldnt walk. so my teacher put him on his back. when they reached the door of the office, the patient was dead. just then a doctor came up and said to my teacher:

　　“how miserable! please send your father into the mortuary③.”

　　“he isnt my teachers father; its hers,” i eplained to the doctor, pointing to the girl.

　　“hers?” replied the doctor in surprise.

　　somebody argues that the taes on birth proclaim to the public what the government wants. thats true. but will the public take birth control without hesitation just because the government wants it? besides, we cant always count on taes to reverse peoples behavior. the doubled taes on wine and cigarettes over the past years dont discourage the consumption of them at all, not to mention other luuries. to a certain degree,drinking and smoking have become more attractive to people as a symbol of financial abilities. how can we epect things to work out better if we simply apply the similar kinds of taes on birth?with the taes on birth policy, the government seems to suggest to people that it is acceptable to have more children, as long as their families can afford the taes. thus new challenges to social equality were posed. rich people can enjoy larger families while poor people are supposed to have fewer children. the rights of giving more births seemed to be entitled to wealthy people under the taes policy.

　　besides, once a child is born, he should be guaranteed the very best his parents could offer. in poor families, wouldnt the children, who are taed be regarded as burdens by other family members because theyve imposed more economic pressures on their families? the ta also directly deprives his or her rights to grow up in a better economic condition while such deprivation to a child in a wealthy family doesnt have much influence at all.

　　the taes on birth policy is, after all, gentle to the rich and tough to the poor, especially to the taed children in poor families. thus, it is not worth so much recommendation.

　　Some People Like to Buy Books to Read,Other People Like to Borrow Books From Libraries or From Other People. Which Do You Prefer?

　　I like reading books. I not only buy books but also borrow books from libraries and from other people. Over the years, this has become a habit. This habit of mine is built upon the famous saying "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested."

　　Every time I go to the bookstore, I will buy some books like dictionaries, reference books which are of pragmatic use and classical literary works which are to be chewed and digested. Unlike some people who buy books just for the purpose of filling their shelves and showing others how learned they are,my purpose is simple and practical reading. Moreover, the books I want to keep are usually too expensive and I can afford only a few volumes.

　　From libraries I borrow books that are to be swallowed,because, on the one hand, library books are not allowed to keep a long time; and on the other hand, the library is a sea of books and think I have to do speed-reading, that is,to swallow as many as I can.

　　I also borrow books from friends, especially new arrivals.I just want to have a taste. If the taste is good, then I will go and buy them to add to my store,If not,well,just for a taste.

　　In short, I don't mind where I can get books, but books are always my source of knowledge and wisdom.
